Yesterday, Microsoft introduced the Surface Laptop Studio, a successor to the Surface Book line of powerful laptops. It is a complete redesign of Microsoft’s flagship laptop, replacing the removable display with one that pulls forward to transform from laptop to tablet (or what Microsoft calls studio mode).

“Surface Laptop Studio is the most powerful Surface we’ve ever built,” says Pete Kyriacou, Microsoft’s vice president of devices. “It is the result of years of Surface innovation – on hinges, display, silicon, and more – and brings the best of the Surface heritage together in one powerhouse device.”

The display and hinge are the most noticeable changes to this Surface Book successor. The 14.4-inch PixelSense Flow (2400 x 1600) display supports 120Hz and Dolby Vision. Microsoft is employing a new flexible Dynamic Woven Hinge, which it claims is durable and allows this laptop to transition between modes in the same way that the larger Surface Studio does. The Surface Laptop Studio has three operating modes: laptop, stage, and studio.

Apple will release iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 on September 20th

The laptop mode arranges the display exactly like a regular laptop, with a full keyboard and a new haptic touchpad. The stage mode is where things get interesting, as you can pull the display forward to a gaming, streaming, or presenting angle. This will cover the keyboard, and the angle is better suited to watching Netflix or playing games, touching the display, or digitally inking with the new Surface Slim Pen 2.

Microsoft’s final mode is studio, and as the name suggests, it’s intended for writing, sketching, and other creative tasks. Microsoft is avoiding using the term “tablet mode” because the Surface Laptop Studio weighs nearly four pounds and is 0.7 inches thick.

I never removed the Surface Book display while using it, so I believe that the new Laptop Studio design correctly maintains the primary focus on laptop modes while also providing some versatility for those who enjoy inking. It appears to be a more refined version of Acer’s Ezel laptop line.

Unlike the Surface Book, Microsoft has relocated the majority of the Surface Laptop Studio’s components to the base. That will certainly improve the laptop’s sturdiness, but it also means that any potential heat will be dissipated onto your lap. The Surface Slim Pen 2, which is surprisingly sold separately, is also neatly housed in the base.

The Surface Laptop Studio can be powered by Intel’s quad-core 11th Gen Core i5 or Core i7 processors. Core i5 models will include Intel Iris Xe graphics, while Core i7 models will include Nvidia’s RTX 3050 Ti GPU with 4GB of VRAM. There will be RAM options ranging from 16GB to 32GB, as well as removable SSD storage of up to 2TB.
